Frequently Asked Questions
What is a Warrant Canary?
A warrant canary is a statement by a service provider that they have NOT received certain types of secret legal orders (like NSLs or FISA court orders). If the canary statement is removed or not updated on schedule, it signals — without violating a gag order — that something has changed.
Why does this page go stale if you receive a secret order?
Gag orders can prevent us from directly disclosing their existence. However, by publishing a regular 'we have NOT received such orders' statement, we can signal a change in status simply by failing to update the page. This is a recognized legal mechanism used by many privacy-conscious platforms.
What should I do if this page is out of date?
If this canary has not been updated by the 'Next Update' date shown above, or if the statements have changed from the previous version, assume we may have received a secret legal order. Consider taking appropriate precautions for your data.
How do you handle regular law enforcement requests?
Non-secret court orders (regular subpoenas and warrants) are handled under our Government Request Policy. We require a valid, specific legal order, notify affected users when permitted, and only provide the minimum data required. All such requests are counted in the transparency table above.
Do you challenge government requests?
Yes. We are legally and ethically committed to challenging overbroad, vague, or unlawful requests. We will use our legal resources to push back before complying, unless an emergency and imminent threat to life requires immediate cooperation.
